Perinatal Forum:  Domestic Abuse - Implementation of Routine Enquiry

The Facts:
  • 1 in 4 women in England & Wales suffer domestic violence at some point
  • 2 women are killed every week by a current or former partner
  • 30% of cases of domestic violence start during pregnancy
  • 90% of violence occurs when children are in same or next room
  • Physical injuries caused by domestic violence cost the NHS £1.2bn per year

Health professionals are well placed to initiate standardised routine enquiry to identify
and offer help and support to victims of domestic abuse.
