Background

The Regional Ultrasound Group (RUG) was originally set up in 1992 following the appointment of Martin Whittle as the First Professor of Fetal Medicine. Mike Wyldes and Ralph Settatree had been working with sonographers following recommendations from the Regional Perinatal Audit; this was formalised into a multidisciplinary group. The RUG provides a professional network, which has aided the implementation of important changes across the West Midlands.

Composition & Role

The RUG comprises sonographers and obstetricians with representatives from maternity units in the West Midlands along with representatives of key services in the region. It is administered and supported by the West Midlands Perinatal Institute. The work of the RUG includes the setting of obstetric ultrasound standards, addressing training issues, implementation of antenatal screening policy and service provision throughout the West Midlands.
