November 2007
The National Institute for
Clinical Excellence has recently published
for consultation draft amendments for
their Antenatal Guideline (see here
).
This draft includes a recommendation
not
to use customised growth charts, and instead
to use fundal height limits +/-3 cm of
gestational
age as a trigger for further investigation
of fetal growth.
The Perinatal Institute belives
that this would be a retrograde step, and
considers
the current NICE review of the
evidence to be incomplete. It has submitted
a comprehensive response which is available
here
.
This document has been distributed to
stakeholders in the 70 maternity units
in
which the customised growth
charts have been implemented . Currently,
the charts are being used in approx. 200,000
pregnancies cared
for in the NHS each year.
