Davey and MacGillivray

A. New-onset hypertension and /or proteinurea in pregnancy

1. Gestational hypertension (without proteinuria)
2. Gestational proteinuria (without hypertension)
3. Pre-eclampsia (hypertension with proteinuria)

B. Chronic hypertension and renal disease

1. Chronic hypertension without proteinuria
2. Chronic renal disease (proteinuria with or without hypertension)
3. Chronic hypertension with superimposed pre-eclampsia (ie. With new-onset proteinuria in pregnancy)

C. Unclassified

1. Hypertension and/or proteinuria noted when first presentation is after 20 weeks
2. As above, when noted for the first time during pregnancy, labour or puerpuriumand there are insufficient background data to permit a diagnosis from category A or B above

D. Eclampsia

Presenting antenatally, in labour or the puerpuerium
Comment: many renal disorders will bot have proteinuria, particularly in their early stages
Comment: the distinction between progressive primary renal disease and superimposed pre-eclampsia may be impossible on clinical grounds in many cases
