National Screening Committee Fetal Anomaly Screening Programme (NSC FASP Website)

Obstetric ultrasound examinations in the first and second trimesters are essential components of anternatal screening programmes.

First trimester ultrasound is used to accurately date pregnancies as part of biochemical screening for Down's syndrome and the inclusion of nuchal translucency measurement improves the performance of Down's syndrome screening programmes.

Second trimester ultrasound is essentially an anatomy survey to detect fetal anomalies at 18-20 weeks.
