Maternal and Neonatal Electronic Recording System

Number 9 - March 2004

  • Following 6 months of development in collaboration with clinicians, programmers and trial sites, the Maternity Core Data Index is presented herewith for wider consultation. It contains 214 data items, listed chronologically and with explanations and references about origin. It is consistent with data collected in the WM Pregnancy Notes and Birth Notes, and the Neonatal Core Data Index. MCDI integrates fields from key NHS datasets and audit requirements which are relevant to maternity care – including NN4B, Smoking (DSC50/2002), National Screening Committee’s antenatal and neonatal screening audits, fetal growth assessment, breastfeeding, data for CEMACH Rapid Report Forms, and CNST. Comments are welcome and should be sent to: manners@pi.nhs.uk with subject line: MCDI.

  • The MANNERS Antenatal Screening Tool has completed successful trials across the West Midlands, and is on target for full implementation in April 2004. It will enable units to provide 18 of the 20 items required by the National Screening Committee for audit purposes. It is anticipated that the first reports will be available by Summer 2004.

  • In preparation for the MANNERS Maternity rollout in autumn 2004, we are disseminating to all WM units our Consent Protocol for secondary use of perinatal data. It links in with information provided in the Pregnancy Notes, and requires a signed record by the care provider to confirm that the information has been given.

  • The first report of the WM Neonatal Care Audit (including NIC, HDU and Special Care) is due for completion in May 2004. Status for the project is available here.

  • There have been recent enquiries from outside the West Midlands, and several units in other regions have expressed an interest to implement MANNERS. The first of these units came on line in February 2004.
