Maternal and Neonatal Electronic Recording System

Number 10 - September 2004

  • The MANNERS Antenatal Screening Tool has been operational and collecting data since April 2004 A demo version can be accessed here (NHS Net connection only). All but two of the 20 West Midlands maternity units are now utilising this resource. They are therefore already able to provide 18 of the 20 items required by the National Screening Committee for audit purposes. A preliminary regional report is expected in November 2004.

  • Final preparations are underway for the regional release of Maternity MANNERS, to commence collection of the dataset within the Maternity Core Data Index. It will be launched in two stages, according to SHA area. October 6: Birmingham and Black Country; November 2: Shropshire & Staffordshire and WM South SHA areas. Dawn Lewis has recently joined the MANNERS team as Maternity Project Administrator.

  • The Neonatal Consent Protocol for secondary use of data has been launched across the West Midlands. Following very positive feedback from parents, BLISS and TAMBA, the Parent Information Leaflet commenced distribution in May this year. The MANNERS Neonatal Team will be carrying out an audit on the impact and use of the leaflet at the end of this year.

  • The preliminary report on MANNERS Neonatal Data was presented to the members of the West Midlands Neonatal Forum in July, and demonstrated the wealth of quality data which is being collected. The addition of denominators provided important background information and is now available from all but one of the neonatal units in the West Midlands. Preparations are underway for the first Annual Report, due in December 2004.
